Litter Box Changes
Separate access problems from urinary or digestive urgency.
Describe the pattern
Note number and size of urine clumps, stool consistency, straining, vocalizing, accidents, entry posture, and whether the box location or litter recently changed.
Make access safer
Add a large low-entry box in a quiet, easy-to-reach location. Keep the old box during the transition and use unscented litter unless your veterinarian advises otherwise.
Urinary blockage is urgent
Repeated straining with little or no urine, distress, vomiting, hiding, or a painful abdomen is an emergency, especially in male cats.
